Banco Santander Madrid sends a camt.029 to BNP Paribas Paris resolving case INV55210 about a payment of USD 367,574.90 that the customer said was missing. Cash Management: camt.029, camt.052, camt.053, camt.054, camt.056 in Depth
What you will learn
Your objective. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain cash management: camt.029, camt.052, camt.053, camt.054, camt.056. The camt.053 message, Bank to Customer Statement, is the formal end of day statement for an account, and it is the document a treasurer reconciles against the company ledger.
Why it matters. This matters because the message is the payment instruction. A wrong field, a missing element or a misunderstood format is a failed payment, a return, or a compliance breach.
Chapter objective: Learner navigates the complete ISO 20022 catalogue, selecting the right message for each business scenario across payments, cash management, securities, and reporting. Learner practises this skill on realistic banking cases, explaining the reasoning clearly and using correct terminology throughout the work.
Key learning points
- Bank to Customer Statement
- Bank to Customer Account Report
- Bank to Customer Debit Credit Notification
- FI to FI Payment Cancellation Request
- Resolution of Investigation
Key terms
Remittance information: Information that explains what a payment is for, such as invoice numbers, contract references or salary month.
Reconciliation: The process of comparing records from two sources, such as a bank statement and an internal ledger, to confirm they agree.
Value date: The date on which funds become available to the beneficiary and on which interest starts to accrue. It is the date used for settlement and for nostro posting.

Exercise
Read the camt.053 message described in this lesson and identify its key parts.
Use the message structure, fields and example in this lesson.
- What to do. List the main blocks of the message, name the field that carries the amount, and name the field that identifies the payment.
Correct result. The message is made of blocks, each carrying a part of the payment instruction. The amount field and the identification field are the two a receiving bank checks first, because without them it cannot process or reconcile the payment.
Why. A message is only useful if you can read it. The blocks tell the receiving bank what to do, and the amount and identification fields are what it checks first.

Practice question
Which of the following best describes cash management: camt.029, camt.052, camt.053, camt.054, camt.056?
Takeaway and next step
What to remember
A camt.029 that reports a successful cancellation for EUR 8,750.00 lets the debtor bank credit its customer and close the case, while a camt.029 that reports the payment was already credited tells the bank that recovery must follow a different path.
Open the message type from this lesson and inspect its fields, then find the field that carries the amount.

camt.053 is the bank to customer statement. It is the message a bank sends to a customer to report the account activity for a period, normally daily, and it is the ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT940 and MT950 statement messages. The camt.053 has a group header, GrpHdr, which carries the message identification, MsgId, the creation date and time, CreDtTm, and the message recipient, MsgRcpt. It has a statement block, Stmt, which carries the statement identification, Id, the electronic sequence number, ElctrncSeqNb, the creation date and time, CreDtTm, the account, Acct, the opening balance, Bal, with the type OPBD, opening booked balance, and the closing balance, Bal, with the type CLBD, closing booked balance, and CLAV, closing available balance, and FWAV, forward available balance. It has one or more entry blocks, Ntry, each carrying the amount, Amt, the credit debit indicator, CdtDbtInd, the status, Sts, the booking date, BookgDt, the value date, ValDt, the account servicer reference, AcctSvcrRef, the bank transaction code, BkTxCd, and the entry details, NtryDtls, with the transaction details, TxDtls, including the references, the remittance information, and the related parties. The balances in a camt.053 are the key to reconciliation. OPBD is the opening booked balance, the balance at the start of the statement period. CLBD is the closing booked balance, the balance at the end of the statement period, after all booked entries. CLAV is the closing available balance, the balance available for use, which may differ from the closing booked balance if some entries are not yet available, for example if a cheque has been deposited but not yet cleared. FWAV is the forward available balance, the balance that will be available on a future date, for example after a forward dated entry is applied. An SME must know these four balance types, because they are the balances the customer reconciles against, and a difference between the CLBD and the CLAV is a normal and expected difference, not an error. camt.052 is the bank to customer account report. It is the message a bank sends to a customer to report the account activity intraday, normally several times a day, and it is the ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT942 interim transaction report. The camt.052 has the same structure as the camt.053, but it is a report, not a statement, and it covers a shorter period. It is used by a corporate treasury to monitor its account intraday, to check that a payment has been debited, or to check that a receipt has been credited, before the end of the day statement arrives. The camt.052 is a report, and it does not have the legal status of a statement, but it is the message a treasury system uses for intraday liquidity management. camt.054 is the bank to customer debit credit notification. It is the message a bank sends to a customer to notify it of a single debit or credit, and it is the ISO 20022 equivalent of the MT900 confirmation of debit and the MT910 confirmation of credit. The camt.054 has a group header, GrpHdr, and a notification block, Ntfctn, which carries the notification identification, Id, the creation date and time, CreDtTm, the account, Acct, and one or more entry blocks, Ntry, each carrying the amount, the credit debit indicator, the booking date, the value date, and the entry details. A corporate that receives a camt.054 for a credit of EUR 250,000 knows that the money has arrived, and it can match the notification to the expected receipt by the references in the entry details. camt.056 is the FI to FI payment cancellation request. It is the message a bank sends to another bank to ask it to cancel a payment that has already been sent. It has a group header, GrpHdr, and an original group information block, OrgnlGrpInf, and a transaction information block, TxInf, which carries the original instruction identification, the original end to end identification, the cancellation reason, and the original payment details. The receiving bank will try to cancel the payment, and it will respond with a camt.029 resolution of investigation, stating whether the cancellation succeeded or failed. A cancellation request is not a guarantee, and it will fail if the payment has already been credited to the beneficiary and the beneficiary has withdrawn the funds. camt.029 is the resolution of investigation. It is the message a bank sends to report the outcome of an investigation, including a cancellation request, a request for information, or a claim of non-receipt. It has a group header, GrpHdr, and an original group information and status block, OrgnlGrpInfAndSts, and a transaction information and status block, TxInfAndSts, which carries the investigation status, InvstgtnSts, which may be RJCR, rejected, ACCP, accepted, or PDNG, pending, and the status reason information. The camt.029 is the message that closes an investigation, and it tells the requesting bank whether the cancellation succeeded, whether the payment was found, or whether the investigation is still pending. For a business analyst, the camt messages are the reporting and investigation interface. The analyst must be able to specify a camt.053 statement with the correct balances, a camt.052 intraday report, a camt.054 notification for a single entry, a camt.056 cancellation request, and a camt.029 resolution. The analyst must know the balance types, OPBD, CLBD, CLAV, and FWAV, and must know that the camt.053 is the statement of record, while the camt.052 is an intraday report. The analyst must also know the investigation flow, because a cancellation request that is not followed by a camt.029 is an open investigation, and an open investigation is a risk.
