Practise this lesson

Exercise

Work out what the beneficiary receives for a 1,000 rupees payment under OUR, SHA and BEN.

Use the charge arrangement rules in this lesson and the correspondent and beneficiary bank fees named in the lesson.

  1. What to do. Calculate the amount credited under each of the three arrangements and state who pays each fee.

Correct result. Under OUR the sender pays all charges and the beneficiary receives the full amount. Under SHA the sender pays the sending charges and the beneficiary pays the receiving charges. Under BEN the beneficiary pays all charges and receives the amount less all fees.

Why. The charge arrangement decides who pays and how much arrives. A customer who was promised the full amount and receives less will complain, and the complaint lands on the analyst.

The eight-session learning path on this site is designed to take a business analyst from zero payments knowledge to job-ready domain expertise, and the best way to use it is in order, with practice between sessions. The first sessions cover the foundations, payment systems, cards, and clearing, and they give you the vocabulary you need. The middle sessions cover the deeper topics, cross-border payments, ISO 20022, and compliance, and they give you the technical depth. The final sessions cover the practical work, recurring payments, platform architecture, and interview preparation, and they give you the skills to apply the knowledge. Revisit the earlier sessions after you finish, because the concepts will make more sense the second time. After the course, the next step is to deepen your knowledge in the areas that match your target role. If you want to work in cards, study the Visa and Mastercard rules, the chargeback process, and tokenization in detail. If you want to work in cross-border payments, study correspondent banking, SWIFT gpi, and foreign exchange. If you want to work in a bank, study the domestic clearing systems and the central bank regulations for your market. The payments domain is wide, and nobody knows all of it, so the smart approach is to go deep in one area while keeping a working knowledge of the rest. That combination of depth and breadth is what employers value most. Building a payments portfolio is the most effective way to prove your skills, and it does not require a job in payments to start. Write a use-case document for a subscription payment, using the structure from chapter 34, and keep it as a sample you can show in interviews. Draw an end-to-end payment platform architecture diagram, with channels, hub, engines, and gateways, and annotate it with the business rules for each layer. Write a short analysis of a regulatory change, such as the RBI e-mandate rules, explaining what changed and what merchants had to do. These artefacts show an interviewer that you can do the work, not just talk about it. The final checklist is simple, and you should work through it honestly. Have you completed all eight sessions of the learning path, and can you explain the key concepts without looking at your notes. Have you earned or started a payments certification, and can you talk about what it covered. Have you written at least one use-case document and one architecture diagram that you can show. Have you updated your resume with specific payments achievements and numbers. Have you practised the ten interview questions from chapter 35 out loud, with real examples. If you can tick all five boxes, you are ready to apply for payments roles with confidence. The last word is about persistence. Payments is a domain that rewards people who stay with it, because the knowledge compounds. Every project teaches you a new message type, a new regulation, or a new failure mode, and each one makes you more valuable. The salary premium, the interesting work, and the career options all follow from that compounding knowledge. Keep learning, keep documenting, and keep building your portfolio, and the payments domain will reward you for years to come. Thank you for completing this course, and good luck with the next step in your career. For example, a business analyst who wants a card acquiring role spends four weeks on the card and chargeback sessions, then writes a use-case document for a subscription of 1,000 rupees a month, using the structure from chapter 34. The analyst also draws a payment platform diagram with channels, hub, engines, and gateways, and practises the ten interview questions out loud. With the document, the diagram, and the practice complete, the analyst applies for card acquiring roles with real evidence of the work.
