Learner explains clearing, bilateral netting, multilateral netting, and the role of a clearing house, and calculates net settlement positions from a set of gross payment obligations. Learner demonstrates this skill using realistic banking examples, explaining each step clearly and using correct terminology throughout.

Clearing concepts and netting: how thousands of payments are sorted, matched and reduced to a single net position before any money moves.

What You Can Do After This Chapter

Learning objective. Learner explains clearing, bilateral netting, multilateral netting, and the role of a clearing house, and calculates net settlement positions from a set of gross payment obligations. Learner demonstrates this skill using realistic banking examples, explaining each step clearly and using correct terminology throughout.

Practical assessment. Learner receives gross obligations between four banks totalling 2,400,000 dollars and calculates the bilateral net positions, then the multilateral net position for each bank through a clearing house. Learner then explains the liquidity saved by netting, showing the gross versus net totals, and states what happens when one bank cannot meet its net debit. Learner submits the work with all calculations, sources, and assumptions stated clearly, and checks the result against the chapter checklist before final submission.

Expected deliverables.

Completion criterion. Learner calculates both netting results correctly, quantifies the liquidity saved, and explains the default consequence for a bank missing its net debit. Completion is judged on accuracy, completeness, and clear reasoning throughout the submitted work.
